Fall Heating Tune-Ups Before the First Cold Front
Central Texas winters are short, but they are not always gentle. A furnace or heat pump can sit idle from spring until a cold front blows through Georgetown, then get asked to run all night. During those quiet months, dust settles on burners, sensors get grimy and small electrical problems stay hidden until the heat is actually needed. A fall heating tune-up from Neal HVAC checks all of that while the weather is still mild and there is time to fix anything we find.
Gas Furnace Tune-Up: What We Check
The exact work depends on your furnace's type, age and condition, but a typical visit includes:
- Burners and flame: inspecting for clean, even burning and cleaning the burners as needed.
- Ignition and flame sensor: testing the igniter and cleaning the flame sensor, two common reasons a furnace will not light on a cold morning.
- Heat exchanger: looking for visible cracks or deterioration in the part that keeps combustion gases separate from the air you breathe.
- Venting: confirming exhaust is leaving the home the way it should.
- Gas connections: inspecting the connections at the furnace for signs of leaks.
- Safety controls: testing limit switches and other controls that shut the furnace down if something goes wrong.
- Blower and electrical: checking the blower assembly, wiring and connections.
- Filter, thermostat and full cycle: making sure the furnace starts, heats and shuts off properly.
Carbon monoxide and gas safety
A gas furnace burns fuel inside your home, so safety is the most important part of the visit. The combustion, venting and heat exchanger checks above are how we look for carbon monoxide risks. A tune-up does not replace working alarms, though. Every home with gas equipment should have carbon monoxide detectors, and fall is a good time to test them.
If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds or you smell gas, get everyone out of the house right away. From outside, call 911 and your gas utility. Do not flip switches or try to find the problem yourself. Once it is safe, we can help with any heating repair the furnace needs.
Heat Pump Tune-Up: What We Check
Many Central Texas homes heat with a heat pump instead of gas. A heat pump uses the same outdoor unit in winter as in summer, just running in reverse, so its fall checkup looks different from a furnace tune-up:
- Reversing valve: confirming the system switches cleanly into heating mode.
- Defrost cycle: making sure the outdoor coil can clear frost in cold, damp weather.
- Refrigerant operation: checking that the system is moving heat properly.
- Backup heat strips: testing the auxiliary heat that kicks in during the coldest stretches.
- Outdoor coil and electrical parts: cleaning debris and testing capacitors, contactors and connections.
- Thermostat settings: making sure heat, auxiliary and emergency heat are set up correctly.
A little steam or a short defrost cycle on a chilly, wet day is normal. Ice that will not clear or loud mechanical noises are not. Learn more on our heat pump services page.
What You Get From a Fall Tune-Up
Peace of mind on gas safety
Knowing a trained technician has looked over the burners, venting and heat exchanger before you start running the heat every night is worth a lot, especially in homes with kids or older family members.
Reliable heat when it turns cold
A dirty flame sensor or weak igniter may work fine on a mild day and fail on the first freezing night. Finding those parts in the fall saves you a cold wait for service.
Better repair decisions
If your system is older, the visit shows you what is wearing out and what can wait. That gives you time to weigh repair against replacement without the pressure of a breakdown.
Signs Your Heating Needs Service Sooner
- The heat is slow to start or blows cool air during a heating cycle
- The furnace or heat pump turns on and off over and over
- A burning smell that does not fade after the first few minutes of the season
- Yellow or flickering burner flames, or soot around the furnace
- Rattling, banging, squealing or repeated clicking
- Some rooms never warm up
